Waiting game for Leeds United and Huddersfield as FA scan video footage of touchline brawl

The FA has until Tuesday to issue charges over the touchline fracas which soured the closing stages of Huddersfield’s 2-1 win at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Trouble broke out after Huddersfield head coach David Wagner celebrated a 90th-minute winner by running onto the pitch to celebrate with his players.

United head coach Garry Monk, who accused Wagner of lacking “humility, respect and class”, appeared to step deliberately into the German’s path as he jogged back to his technical area and a collision between them provoked scuffling involving numerous players and staff.

Monk and Wagner were sent to the stands by referee Simon Hooper, who later submitted a match report to the FA’s disciplinary department, and both coaches are now facing possible touchline bans.

Leeds and Huddersfield could also be punished for failing to control their players and staff.

Monk has already served a one-match suspension this season after being dismissed towards the end of a 1-0 defeat at Bristol City in September. He sat in the directors’ box for a 1-0 loss to Derby County at Pride Park 10 days later.

Wagner, meanwhile, avoided any disciplinary sanctions after celebrating in a similar fashion after Huddersfield’s 2-1 win over Derby in September.

Wagner admitted to losing “control of my emotions” on that occasion and he apologised for entering the field after Michael Hefele’s late goal settled yesterday’s derby. Wagner, however, accused Monk of starting the brawl by walking into him.

An angry Monk responded by saying: “I hold the highest values in my life - humility, respect and class. That’s what I hold highest and I make my players hold that.

“If someone doesn’t want to act like that then that’s their prerogative. It doesn’t mean that we all have to agree with it. That’s all I can say about the situation.”
