Christiansen singled out tomorrow’s opponents, Wolverhampton Wanderers, as the best team in the Championship after their surge to the top of the table but said he wanted a result at Molineux to keep Leeds moving forward after Sunday’s victory against Middlesbrough.

United rose to an intense occasion at the weekend as goals from Pablo Hernandez and Gjanni Alioski took the scalp of Garry Monk’s Boro at Elland Road and answered a sustained run of poor league form.

The result took Leeds back to the verge of the top six but tomorrow evening’s game will pit Christiansen’s players against a side who are vying with Sheffield United for first place in the division and have won six of their last seven games.

Christiansen, who is targeting a play-off position, said: “We weren’t so far from our goal (before Sunday) and we’re still not where we want to be. We just took one important step but we work hard to do things better.

“We need to continue with the work, taking good results and performances but it only comes when the team believe in their ability and their possibilities in the league. They’ve proved once again that they’re a very good squad and that they can do it against any team.

“The result of the last game will help the players, no doubt, but they know that they’re good enough to win on any pitch. The opponent we had against us (Middlesbrough) are almost a Premier League club so everyone was happy with what the players delivered. We took the result that we went for.”

Wolves underwent substantial change in the summer, replacing former manager Paul Lambert with ex-Porto coach Nuno Espirito Santo and recruiting from several top clubs across Europe. Their transfer record

was broken by the £15.8million arrival of Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves from from Porto.

The strategy has paid off so far with Wolves winning 12 of their 17 games and losing just three, including a single home defeat to Cardiff City in August.

Christiansen said: “With the performances they’ve made, the position they’re in now and the game’s I’ve analysed, they’re a very strong team. From my point of view, right now, they’re the best.

“I believe it’s one of the most difficult games we’ll have. They’re a great team with good performances and it’s fair to say they are where they’ve played until now. But I believe in my team and that we’ll be able to take a good result.”
