Roberts will be handed his first appearance at Roots Hall almost six months after joining Leeds in a £2.5m move from West Bromwich Albion.

The striker suffered a shin injury within a fortnight of completing that transfer and failed to play once last season as his recovery dragged into the summer.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa left him out of United’s first two pre-season games against Forest Green Rovers and York City but Roberts is part of a 15-man squad taken by Bielsa to Essex for this afternoon’s match (kick-off 2pm).

That group features a number of senior players, including Luke Ayling, Adam Forshaw, Liam Cooper, Samuel Saiz and Gjanni Alioski, but goalkeeper and new signing Jamal Blackman is missing again having failed to appear at either Forest Green or York.

Pablo Hernandez also failed to make the trip with Leeds planning for another long trip to Oxford United on Tuesday night.
