The midfielder has failed to make much of an impression with the Black Cats since joining the club from Brighton for £2.5m in 2014.

The 26-year-old was sent out on loan to Leeds United last autumn but only played four games for the Whites before eventually returning to Sunderland and then heading to Birmingham City, again on loan.

But now the Owls have offered the winger a third Championship loan move with Buckley joining up with former Black Cats team-mate Steven Fletcher who has also signed for the club.

Buckley has one year left on his contract at Sunderland and is eligible to make his Owls debut in Sunday’s curtain-raiser at home to Aston Villa.

Birmingham were also keen on signing the winger towards the end of his loan spell at St Andrew’s.

Leeds United continue to be linked with various players and the Whites are definitely investigating the possibility of signing Benfica left-back Alexis Scholl.

The 22-year-old Belgian was a youth player at Anderlecht and now plays for Benfica B.

United are also known to be chasing a midfielder who plays for French club Lyon - believed to be 20-year-old Frenchman Olivier Kemen, formerly of Newcastle United.

Leeds are also slowly but surely making progress to sign defensive midfielder Liam Bridcutt from Sunderland, a move that has been touted throughout the summer.

Bridcutt shone on loan at Elland Road last season and is no longer part of Sunderland’s plans but a transfer fee and Bridcutt’s wages are the sticking points.

Nottingham Forest’s Jack Hobbs and Aston Villa’s Joleon Lescott, both centre-backs, are other names strongly linked with a move to Garry Monk’s Whites.

Leeds have also been linked with a move for Barnsley centre-back Alfie Mawson but the Elland Road side think the 22-year-old will be too expensive.

The Tykes have also agreed a deal to sign trialist midfielder Sessi D’Almeida - formerly of PSG - with the move set to be completed once international clearance is received.

More summer signings look imminent at Rotherham United with manager Alan Stubbs revealing that the club have made “two or three” offers that exceed the £5000,000 fee paid to Peterborough United to sign winger Jon Taylor.

One of those is understood to be a £600,000 offer for Tottenham midfielder Grant Ward – who starred on loan with the Millers last year – but he opted to join Ipswich Town for a similar fee instead.

In the Premier League, Hull City could face a battle to keep star striker Abel Hernandez, who has been linked with a big-money move to Aston Villa.

Villa have already splashed out £12m to land striker Ross McCormack from Fulham but the recently relegated Championship side are still intent on further spending.

Defender Harry Maguire could also be heading out of the KC with the 24-year-old expected to hand in a transfer request following a £5m bid from Middlesbrough which was rejected.

On an incoming side, the Tigers are thought to be pursing a deal to sign Torino’s Argentinian striker Maxi Lopez.

The 32-year-old could reportedly become a Hull City player by the end of the weekend, with Hull facing Torino in their final pre-season friendly in Austria on Saturday.

The Tigers had also been linked with a move for out-of-favour Bordeaux defender Lamine Sane but he has joined Werder Bremen.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are reportedly lining up a move to sign Cardiff City full-back Fabio.

The 26-year-old former Manchester United defender is in the final year of his contract at Cardiff who could look to cash in on the player while they can.

Boro are also said to be among the clubs interested in signing Zinedine Zidane’s midfielder son Enzo Alan Zidane Fernández on loan from Real Madrid.

Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt is another player being linked with a move to the Riverside but Southampton are also interested in signing the 22-year-old Netherlands Under-21 international.

In League One, Sheffield United continue to be linked with a move for Chesterfield captain Sam Morsy while in League Two Everton’s former Doncaster Rovers loanee Conor Grant has joined Championship side Ipswich Town on loan.
