HEAD COACH Thomas Christiansen said it was over to Leeds United's players to deliver with the club having done their bit by penning the likes of Pontus Jansson down to long term deals.

Jansson became the latest Whites player in a growing list to sign a new longer term contract on Wednesday as the Swedish centre-back agreed terms on a new five-year deal.

And head coach Christiansen said he hoped the likes of Jansson would now reward Leeds for their loyalty and belief in such players through the performances on the pitch.

Fourth-placed United are looking to finally earn promotion to the Premier League after a 13-year absence with third-placed Sheffield United the club’s next opponents in Friday night’s crunch clash at Elland Road.

“It shows that the club believes in them and that they have the trust,” said Christiansen, asked about United’s latest commitment to signing a valuable asset to a long term deal.

“Then it is the player who has to deliver on the pitch.”

Asked about the thinking to commit Jansson to another five years at Leeds, Christiansen reasoned: “We think in the future of the club.

“We have made several important movements in the renewal of players and he is one of them.”

Jansson was dropped by Christiansen for last weekend’s Championship success at Bristol City after admitting himself on social media that his recent form had been “sh*t” as part of three consecutive losses.

Everton loanee Matthew Pennington instead partnered captain Liam Cooper at centre back with Jansson then given the chance to impress in Tuesday night’s fourth round Carabao Cup clash at Leicester City who progressed to the quarter finals with a 3-1 victory.
