Super sub' Dickinson strikes late for Guiseley

It was a moment that Lions manager Mark Bower would have looked back on with pride, with his decision to bring Dickinson on from the bench almost immediately vindicated.

The ball reached the former Stockport County striker in the box from a corner kick and he volleyed home to send Guiseley back to West Yorkshire with all three points.

Despite having to wait for a late winner against one of the league’s struggling sides, Bower was happy enough: “It was definitely about the three points.

“I didn’t care how we got it, but we had a number of chances and could have been out of the game within half an hour.

“But they grew into the game and it was a pleasing performance.”

The Harriers had been waiting for a game since the sacking of former Leeds United boss Dave Hockaday, who was axed last month after a poor run of form.

A series of postponements meant it took until the third week of January for the post-Hockaday era to begin, but it continued in a similar vein.

Guiseley were able to take control early on. Adam Boyes thought he had scored when he was able to get the ball into the back of the net but it was ruled out.

There was then a negative for the visitors when Ollie Norburn had to be subbed early when he had a hamstring problem, but it did not seem to interrupt Guiseley’s rhythm.

The Lions kept on pressing, with Gavin Rothery seeing his close-range effort go wide of the goal.

As the half went on the home side started to gain more possession, but the away side’s defence coped with their efforts.

Guiseley were given a slight warning at the start of the second-half. Elton Ngwatala hit the post.

However, after that the away side again looked comfortable on the ball and kept creating chances, although nothing as clear-cut as in the first half.

Eventually the pressure told and Guiseley took the lead. Dickinson showed a striker’s instinct to score with his first touch from a well-worked corner kick, volleying into the back of the net. The Lions then held on to earn a valuable three points to keep themselves seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Halifax Town increased their undefeated run to 11 games by drawing 1-1 with Woking.

Chris Arthur’s dismissal was the turning point of the game. He was sent off for fouling Halifax’s James Bolton, which provided an opportunity for Town to equalise. Sam Walker got the goal, firing a stunning free-kick straight into the top corner.

In the National League North Harrogate Town blitzed league leaders Solihull Moors with six of the best to take three points from an important game.

Debutant Warren Burrell struck to send his new side Harrogate on their way in the 38th minute.

After the game resumed Lloyd Kelly doubled Harrogate’s advantage before Burrell scored a second to put the game beyond doubt. Paul Clayton then made it four from Joe Colbeck’s corner. Two minutes then brought two late goals to complete the rout.

Danny Ellis headed home from another corner, and provider Colbeck turned scorer, shooting past the shell-shocked Danny Lewis to make it six.

Frickley Athletic piled on the misery for Evo-Stik Premier Division basement side Ramsbottom United as they triumphed 3-0.

It took only 17 minutes for Frickley to take the lead through Jacob Hazel. James Walshaw, a new signing for Frickley, doubled the advantage only a minute after the half-time break, and Tyler Williams rounded off the victory with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Ossett Albion were denied the opportunity to improve their fourth position in the First Division North when they lost 3-0 at home to second-placed Northwich Victoria.

Farsley Celtic are eighth after a 2-1 victory against Bamber Bridge at Throstle Nest. They took the lead through Glenn Steel’s own goal after Adam Clayton struck the post. Paddy Miller then made it 2-0 in the 50th minute. Farsley suffered late jitters after Matty Kay’s goal for Bamber, but it turned out to be little more than a consolation.

Harrogate Railway Athletic held out for a goalless draw against Radcliffe Borough despite Simon Parkes’ late dismissal, which moved them to within two points of Ossett Town in 20th after Town suffered a 4-0 trouncing at the hands of Trafford.

In the NCEL Premier Division, Tadcaster Albion returned to action after 33 days without a match but did not miss a beat, demolishing Brigg Town 3-1 away from home thanks to a hat-trick from captain Jimmy Beale.

Garforth Town lost 5-1 to Pickering Town while Pontefract Collieries went down to a 3-0 loss against Worksop Town.

In the pick of the Division One action, Yorkshire Amateur beat Lincoln Moorlands Railway 4-1.
