Saturday round-up: Saints hold nerve to book place in FA County Challenge Cup semi-finals

The hosts sit top of the West Riding County Amateur League and netted through Kitson Gayle but a 1-1 draw took the game to spot kicks. West Yorkshire League leaders Saints then held their nerve to triumph 5-3 and book a Woodlesford date with Pool AFC on March 31.

The semis will be an all West Yorkshire League affair with Field edging a 4-3 cracker at Rimington in the last eight. Field will now face title rivals Carlton Athletic on March 24.

In the County Challenge Trophy, Yorkshire Amateur League Division One side Drighlington’s brave run was finally ended with a 6-2 loss at Huddersfield Amateur in the quarter-finals.

Drig’, who have seven players aged 22 or under, led after 90 seconds through Mikey Durham and while Amateur quickly equalised, Shane Sowden put the visitors back in front.

But a hat-trick from Matty Parker eventually led the hosts to victory with Field Reserves or Headingley AFC Reserves awaiting in the semi-finals.

Honley also booked their place in the semis with a 1-0 win at home to Newsome Reserves. Mount St Marys or Howden Clough await in the last four.

Leeds City booked a West Yorkshire League Cup quarter-final at Carlton with a 5-1 win at home to Pool. Joe Dixon’s double was supported by strikes from Barrie Frankland, Joe Tasker and James Hochstrasser, with Robert Cross on target or Pool. Horbury Town were 4-3 winners at Headingley to set up a home tie with Hunslet Club.

Brighouse Old Boys obliged 4-3 at Otley Town to set up a clash with Robin Hood Athletic who won 4-3 on penalties at Shelley after a 1-1 draw last Wednesday night.

James Cummings, Richard Heins, Lee Williams and Matthew Richardson netted for Brighouse to sink Otley who scored through Scott Firth, Josh Waite and Connor Wilson but had Toby Harris sent off.

In Division One of the West Yorkshire, Sherburn White Rose strengthened their hold on second spot with a 3-2 verdict at home to Hartshead thanks to a Danny Middleton double and Aaron Hodgson strike.

Third-placed Whitkirk Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Leeds Modernians.

A Timothy Clarke treble and Craig Gomersal strike were in vain for second-bottom Hartshead who were stung 7-4 by visiting Aberford Albion.

Division Two leaders Hall Green United moved eight points clear as a Jamie Miller treble and Billy Mole goal wrapped up a 4-0 win at home to Middleton Park.

A handful of games survived elsewhere, led by a 14-0 romp for Fox & Hounds at home to Queen (Wakefield) in Wakefield League Division Two. Other highlights included a 4-3 win for Littletown at Golcar United in the County Amateur Premier whilst Inter Batley moved third in the Spen Valley First Division with a 1-0 win at home to Savile Town.
