Nottingham Forest 3 Leeds United 1: Monk will use international break to iron out defensive mistakes

Garry Monk says he will use the international break to work on the defensive mistakes he feels are costing Leeds United - and never more so than in the 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest.

Pajtim Kasami’s driven effort and a header from Damien Perquis put the home side in control, with both goals conceded from corners.

A stunning free-kick from Kalvin Phillips in the 84th minute set up a frantic finale but Oliver Burke killed the game off deep into injury time when he produced a fine solo effort to restore Forest’s two-goal cushion.

After three losses from five league games and just four points out of a possible 15, United now sit fourth-bottom heading into the international break, with a home clash against leaders Huddersfield Town next on the agenda a week on Saturday.

United have now conceded five goals from corners already this term, much to the frustration of Monk.

“We gifted them two soft goals, which made it difficult,” said Monk.

“In general play we were the better team.

“From the 46th minute they were wasting time, they looked nervous when it came to holding on to their 1-0 lead. But we never really pushed them back.

“We needed to be more clinical, we needed to take our chances. We conceded soft goals and Forest did nothing in general play otherwise.

“If not for the goals we conceded we would have won the game, definitely.

“We have the international break now and some time for us to work on things, to drill a few things into the players. We need to cut out the sloppiness and the individual errors. We have the squad to address this.”
