Norwich City 2 Leeds United 1: Another trip to the Pit of Misery for long-suffering fans - YEP jury

Having witnessed yet another Leeds United defeat, the Yorkshire Evening Post jury points to an air of inevitability about the performance '“ and season. And they're not too convinced about head coach Paul Heckingbottom either ...

See if you agree with what they have to say:

DAVID WATKINS

Once again Leeds got into a great position, a goal up away from home, and a superb goal to boot, with just six minutes of the first half remaining.

We should have been two up when Kemar Roofe went through but couldn’t hit the target with only the keeper to beat. But we’d never be any good looking after next door’s dog would we; we just seem incapable of hanging onto a lead.

There was a degree of good fortune about the Norwich equaliser the way it looped over Bailey Peacock-Farrell and squirmed almost apologetically over the line having kissed both posts, but to say that ignores the fact that Ronaldo Vieira gave the ball away cheaply in the first place.

There was something inevitable about the way Norwich then forced Peacock-Farrell into making several first-class saves only to embarrass him with a fierce angled drive from Murphy in the 69th minute; that was just cruel.

To my eyes the now familiar substitution of Alioski by Grot seemed all wrong.

And after that point any impetus Leeds had was lost.

Too many Leeds players spoiled much of their good work through sloppy errors such that the MOTM award is nigh on impossible, but for another mature display I’ll go for Tom Pearce.

Man of the match: Tom Pearce.

Another trip to the ‘Pit of Misery’ for the long-suffering supporters of a team full of players that can’t even be bothered or were told not to come out and speak to the media after their fourth defeat on the trot away from home.

They are shameless and don’t deserve the superb support they receive week after week.

Paul Heckingbottom made one change to the game with Norwich City. Liam Cooper replaced Paudie O’Connor.

Thomas Christiansen was sacked for a horrendous run that ended with a defeat at home to Cardiff.

Heckingbottom has done nothing (I could be a lot stronger but it’s a family read paper) in my opinion to be kept on as head coach. He has been a disaster! A cheap option by Andrea Radrizzani that hasn’t worked. It’s as simple as that Close the door as your leaving Paul.

It seems that trying your best for the supporters doesn’t come high on the agenda of the worst squad I’ve had the displeasure of watching since the mid-eighties. Some of them are a disgrace to the shirt they wear.

Siaz and Roofe had a couple of chances in the second half of the game to give Leeds the second goal but it was the home side who scored the valuable second.

Murphy collected Hoolahan’s pass and beat Peacock-Farrell from inside the penalty box. The only reply from Leeds was an effort from substitute Adam Forshaw that Gunn parried to safety.

It’s very hard to find any positives out of the 2-1 defeat in East Anglia, ahead for a few minutes courtesy of a Kalvin Phillips goal before a shot by Hoolahan got a lucky bounce that beat Peacock-Farrell just before the break.

Man of the match: Not for the first time the supporters get the plaudits, nobody wearing white deserves a comment. Nothing ‘Dilly, Dilly’ about them at all.

MIKE GILL

It’s the hope that kills.

If Leeds hadn’t started the season so well.

If Samuel Saiz hadn’t seemed like a world beater.

If Pierre-Michel Lasogga hadn’t seemed to look like an adequate replacement for Chris Wood.

And if we didn’t worry about the goalkeeper because he was so rarely tested anyway.

In a way, this game was a bit like that. If Ronaldo Vieira hadn’t miskicked, leaving Kalvin Phillips with a chance to crack the ball into the Norwich net etc etc.

With a couple of minutes to half-time, departing hero Wes Holohan equalised with a bizarre goal which hit both posts before going in. Glad I declined the free Holohan face mask which was offered to me outside the ground.

Inevitably in the second half, Murphy grabbed the winner. To be fair, Leeds have been worse but it was the same old stuff.

Even bringing on Jay-Roy Grott and Lasogga when all else had failed.

Paul Heckingbottom? I’m not convinced.

Man of the match: Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

For not the first time this season Leeds managed to not only sink to the level of the opposition but plunge even deeper.

Leeds have a do-or-die summer ahead which is unlikely to benefit from an unprecedented post-season trip to Burma.

The club needs to concentrate on basics. Square pegs in square holes and a team that isn’t hard wired with built-in faults. It’s hard to remember a game which Leeds dictated and it’s time to learn to swim and not tread water or worse, as is presently the case, sink.

Norwich were there for the mullering after Kalvin Phillips pinged the ball into the net with such stylishness that he might expect a song in his honour to ring from the terraces. He shouldn’t hold his breath. The Leeds-born player can hardly be described as a crowd favourite.

By the end of the game though, it was the less-lauded players who looked more capable of reversing the plummet beyond this, the 20th defeat of the season, while The Canaries were in little more than testimonial mode.

One of their few remaining decent players, Wes Hoolahan, said his goodbyes and Norwich were at walking pace as they scored their second. Hoolahan’s opposite number, Pablo Hernandez had his second bad game on the trot though arguably, only his second of the season.

His compatriot, Samu Saiz continued a prolonged ineffective spell that suggests his deification was somewhat premature. Kemar Roofe was deemed the best available to plough the lone front man furrow in a formation that is becoming as predictable as prison food.

It’s a set-up settled on by Garry Monk two coaches ago and remains stubbornly in place, despite the club failing to recruit the personnel to play it.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Jay-Roy Grot came on to rescue the game, underlining the stark inadequacy of the squad built by Victor Orta.

Man of the match: Not applicable.

MATTHEW EVANS

Saturday was always going to be a non-event but nobody expected United to show it quite so blatantly.

Strolling around Carrow Road like they’d never seen a football before, thoughts very obviously turned to the summer break: sun, sea, sand and maybe a transfer out of Elland Road; these players were awful.

This is the game that finally makes me wonder whether Paul Heckingbottom deserves a chance next season. I’ve had doubts about him since before he signed but, until now, I’ve felt he should have the summer to be judged fairly in 2018/2019.

His casual criticism of Tom Pearce in the post-match interview was reminiscent of Neil Warnock’s outbursts against Tom Lees. Had it been true it would have been inappropriate but Pearce was not, by any distance, the worst player in a white shirt.

It’s practically impossible to pull out a man of the match after such a poor showing from all concerned by Kalvin Phillips had a quality goal to add to an OK performance. Just one week left of this miserable season.

Man of the match: Kalvin Phillips.
