Women's Football: Vixens give survival hopes huge shot in the arm

Guiseley Vixens' survival hopes were given a huge boost as they earned a persistent and vital 3-2 victory over Premier League North relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion, writes CONNOR CRAIG-JACKSON.

Ellie Olds deservedly put Guiseley ahead with a superb opener which was then cancelled out by a late-half strike from Jennifer Kikomeko.

The pattern continued into the second-half when Natalie Brace headed Guiseley back in front, only for Kikomeko to once again level from the spot.

However, the Vixens eventually found the winner through top scorer Nikki Berko, sealing a victory that puts them just four points from safety with three games in hand.

Elsewhere, a similarly dramatic outing saw Brighouse Town keep up the pressure on Premier League North Division One leaders Hull City after Charlotte Proud’s goal and Aimi Beresford’s brace sealed a hard-fought 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Meanwhile, Leeds United’s relegation worries came back to the fore against Chorley, as their 1-0 first-half lead through Shelbey Morris was undone in the second half.

Leeds lost 2-1 to remain without a home win since October.

In the West Riding Premier Division, seemingly relegation-destined Wetherby Athletic bagged a fourth successive win, as they beat relegation rivals Brighouse Athletic 3-2 through Lucy Cram, Holly Fowler and Megan Maxted.

Meanwhile, Leeds Medics and Dentists and Bradford Park Avenue remain firmly in Wetherby’s sights after they played out a 2-2 stalemate, while Tingley Athletic eliminated Yorkshire Amateur from the title picture after beating them 2-1 through a dramatic late winner from Lucy Richardson after Lucy Chapman and Ammas’ Lindsey Hopton had made the scores level.

The title race in the First Division, however ,remains a two-horse race, with Clare Parker’s hat-trick helping leaders Farsley Celtic Reserves to an 8-0 win at Clifton Rangers, while Ossett Town Firsts remain just one point behind them with one game left after thrashing Leeds City 11-2.

Republica Internationale, meanwhile, ended their season on a high with a 2-0 victory over Dewsbury Rangers.

Middleton Athletic’s incredible league run now leaves them just one point from sealing promotion from the Second Division after they saw off title rivals Lower Hopton 3-0.

Tyersal lost 3-2 at Boroughbridge in the Supplementary Cup despite goals from Nicky Davies and Abbie Tate, while Ilkley Town were emphatic at Farsley Celtic Reserves with Charlotte Hill’s hat-trick, Georgia Barr’s brace and Jessica Tindale’s strike sealing a 7-1 win.
