The funeral will be followed by a burial at Pudsey Cemetery at 2.30pm. Family flowers only but donations to Patterdale Mountain Rescue can be made at the church. Friends are invited back to Pudsey St Lawrence after the service. Sanderson died a week last Saturday. He had recently managed Gildersome Spurs and Beeston St Anthony’s after retiring as a player where he excelled for Farsley in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The popular local football ace scored the winning goal in Farsley’s 1988 West Riding County Cup final triumph over Pontefract Collieries – the final game of Denis Metcalf’s first spell in charge at Throstle Nest. Sanderson’s brother Graham was captain of Farsley for a large part of the 1980s and went on to manage them in 1991.
Farsley Celtic, Gildersome Spurs Old Boys, Beeston St Anthony’s and Drighlington Juniors all held a minute’s silence before their games on Saturday in Sanderson’s memory.
Poignantly, Sanderson’s former club Besston beat West Yorkshire League champions and previously unbeaten league leaders Field 4-1.
