Steve Bruce's fifth-bottom side fell behind in the 17th minute as Raphinha netted for the Whites but Newcastle rallied strongly in the second half.

Miguel Almiron levelled after a neat move 12 minutes after the break yet Leeds winger Jack Harrison scored what proved the winning goal just four minutes later.

Newcastle, though, went mightily close to bagging an equaliser with Jamal Lewis blasting a particularly fine chance over the bar.

Whites keeper Illan Meslier also pulled off good saves to deny Jonjo Shelvey and Schar whilst a Jamaal Lascelles header clipped the crossbar.

But Leeds held firm to end a run of three-straight defeats meaning Newcastle have gone now gone 11 games without a win in league and cup.

The Magpies have also picked up just two points from their last eight Premier League games.

"What should I say? The run we have now, I don't know what to say," Swiss centre-back Schar told NUFC TV.

"But with the result, we have had poor games this season but I think in this 90 minutes, especially the second half we tried everything and we gave everything.

"I think we deserved more, at least a point and it's hard to take.

"I don't know what to say at the minute.

"If you are in the situation we are and you don't get a point out of this game it's hard to take.

"We have to keep going like the second half and then I am sure we just need a good game with a result for our side and a lot of things could change but obviously it's not good enough."
