Jack Harrison says Leeds United went into the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United with a lot of 'fire' at St James' Park.

The Whites entered the clash against the Magpies winless in their last three outings across all competitions and were yet to find the back of the net in 2021.

United, though, battled to a narrow victory on Tyneside as they moved themselves 14 points clear of the relegation zone to sit 12th in the Premier League table.

Raphinha opened the scoring for the visitors after 17 minutes as the Brazilian winger calmly found the bottom corner of the net from inside the box.

Steve Bruce's side hit back through Miguel Almiron after the break with Leeds caught in possession just before the hour mark.

The hosts weren't on level terms for long as Harrison restored Leeds' advantage four minutes later, striking an emphatic volley past Karl Darlow to seal all three points in an important win.

"We knew it was going to be a challenge," Harrison said post-match.

"We'd been preparing all week for this and we had to come out strong which we did.

"The manager talks about having personality and character and we went into this game with a lot of fire. Newcastle can give you problems up front but we did well to come away all three points.

"We'll keep our heads down and keep working hard game by game."

Harrison added: "They are a top side, they gave us a lot of problems in attack.

"When you come into the game you know it's going to be a challenge but we have to give credit to how we played. There's always going to be things we can improve on but to come away with three points is good for us.

"When we were trying to build out of the back, we were losing the ball too easily at times and we should've probably kept possession.

"They defended well in their own half and that made it difficult for us to get out but we created more chances after their goal and managed to get the second goal, which was a huge bonus."
