It was the visitors who struck first as Sterling opened the scoring with a fine curling strike from outside the box to give City a deserved lead following early domination.

Leeds, though, fought back to wrestle more control as the game continued and went close through Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling before the interval.

Record signing Rodrigo then stepped off the bench after the break to pounce on an Ederson mistake in the visiting goal from a corner with the Spain international later hitting the bar.

United and City went toe to toe in the latter stages as both sides attempted to find a winner with the clash seeing a frantic finish.

The points were shared in West Yorkshire as both teams failed to find the back of the net in the closing minutes with both managers saluting an entertaining draw afterwards.

Sterling admitted post-match that the Whites put up a tough fight but appreciated their efforts in a close match.

"They were right in our faces,” Sterling reflected after the draw at Elland Road.

“I prefer playing against teams like that instead of teams who put 11 men behind the ball. It was a difficult game. The energy levels from start to finish were impressive.”

Asked about the opening stages of the season for City with the upcoming international break, he added: ”We've done fantastic with the short squad that we have had.

"After the international break, we should have a fit squad and ready to go.”

"There were a few setbacks that we’ve had like injuries. (But) I think we’ve done well.”
