Robbie Fowler dedicates first Brisbane Roar win to ex Liverpool and Leeds United team-mate Dominic Matteo

Robbie Fowler has dedicated his first win as Brisbane Roar boss to ex Leeds United man Dominic Matteo who is recovering from brain surgery.

Fowler tweeted his support for his former Leeds and Liverpool team-mate after the Roar’s 4-3 victory over Melbourne City, saying: “Won our first game yesterday Dom, losing 3-1, ended up winning 4-3. Team showed plenty of fight like yourself, dedicating it to you.”

Matteo, a former Whites captain and YEP columnist, is being treated in hospital having fallen seriously ill last week.

The 45-year-old underwent an operation on a brain tumour and is now out of intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary.

His friend, Greatest Hits Radio DJ Simon Ross, tweeted an update on Sunday, saying Matteo had responded well to surgery.

“Just had a FaceTime call from him, he was on incredible form, chatting, talking football, joking and very positive and immensely great full to all the hospital staff at the LGI, amazing recovery,” he said.

Matteo made over 150 appearances for the Whites.
