Quick and keen to take players on - what Leeds United new boy Crysencio Summerville's 2019/20 season at ADO Den Haag tells us

Only one player under the age of 20 was more successful at taking on players in the Dutch top flight last season than Leeds United's newest recruit Crysencio Summerville.

The 18-year-old winger, who signed a three-year deal at Elland Road today, is direct. He runs at people with pace and proved problematic for Eredivisie defenders in a 2019/20 season he spent on loan at ADO Den Haag.

Feyenoord farmed their teenage prospect out to their fellow top division side in August of 2019 and before the league was declared null and void, Summerville made an impression and caught the eye of clubs like Leeds and Anderlecht.

In 21 appearances, 17 of which came as starts for the strugglers, he successfully took on and went past opposition players 31 times. Only Mohammed Ihattaren of PSV completed more successful take ons in the league's ranks of Under 20 aged players.

He operated primarily on the right flank for Den Haag, although popped up on occasion on the opposite wing, and like the most dangerous of Leeds' current wingers Jack Harrison, showcased a great first touch. His final ball, at times, was lacking but as Harrison showed last season, that is something which can be improved, the longer you spend under Marcelo Bielsa's care. Encouragingly for his future prospects of earning game time under the Argentine, he has already shown a natural determination to win the ball back [3.3 ball recoveries per 90 last season] and a decent work-rate off the ball.

Summerville's skill, speed and slight stature helped him to win almost three free-kicks per 90 minutes last season and he earned two penalties for his loan club. When he found the net on October 26 last year against Vitesse, four days before his 18th birthday, he became Den Haag's youngest ever goalscorer in the Eredivisie. His second of the season came in February against Sparta Rotterdam. Prior to last season he netted five times on loan for second tier outfit FC Dordrecht.

Before departing his motherland for a new life in England, and having said no to a long-term deal at Feyenoord, Summerville played once for their Under 21 side this season and registered an assist in a 4-2 defeat to NAC Breda.

He is expected to feature for Mark Jackson's Under 23s, for whom wingers Liam McCarron, Stuart McKinstry and Jordan Stevens currently occupy places in the team. Stevens, however, is potentially going out on loan to Swindon Town for the season.
