Premier League substitution rule change will kick in for Leeds United's game against Crystal Palace - how it will work

The Football Association and the Premier League have successfully applied to the International Football Association Board [IFAB] to trial additional permanent concussion replacements across the Premier League, Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship and Emirates FA Cup.

For the Premier League the trial begins from February 6, two days before Leeds host Palace at Elland Road, while the fifth round of the FA Cup will also feature the new protocol later next month.

A joint statement from the FA and Premier League said: "With player welfare the priority, the protocols will allow a maximum of two concussion substitutes to be used per team, with the opposition side able to use the equivalent number. The additional concussion substitutions may be made regardless of the number of substitutions a team has made already.

"The trial is a result of the IFAB’s consultation with stakeholders and recommendations from their concussion expert group to allow additional substitutions for players with actual or suspected concussion."

The way the concussion substitutions will work is if a referee stops a match for a potential concussion injury, medical staff from the player's team will make an on-field assessment while a doctor in the tunnel reviews footage of the incident.

The team doctor will have as much time as is required to make an on-pitch clinical assessment of the player.

If there are clear symptoms of concussion, or the video provides clear evidence of concussion, the team will be permitted to apply to replace the player with an additional permanent concussion substitution.

The substituted player will not be allowed to return to the field of play.
