Little-known Phil Gibbs became a Football League official in 2008 and has refereed United just once before – their 3-0 defeat at Swindon Town in January 2010.

The deputy headmaster has been relatively lenient this season, showing 95 yellow cards and sending off four players during 30 competitive matches.

Saturday’s fixture at Fratton Park is his eighth npower Championship game of the term.
