Paul Cook's hilarious eight-word response when asked how to BEAT Leeds United at Elland Road

Former Wigan Athletic boss Cook has tasted victory on his previous two visits to Elland Road with the Latics when the pair met during their Championship days.

Cook left the DW Stadium at the end of last season after the club’s relegation to League One following a 12-point deduction for entering administration.

The 53-year-old is waiting for the right opportunity to return to management but in the meantime is doing punditry work with Sky Sports.

On the Football Show, Cook, given his recent success in West Yorkshire, was asked to reveal his secret on how to overcome Marcelo Bielsa – and he provided a brilliant response.

“Defend your 18-yard box with 11 men!” Cook joked.

Cook proceeded to wax lyrics about Bielsa’s men, who moved into the top 10 of the Premier League after a 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace on Monday.

He added: “When you come out of the Championship in general, you’re used to winning. You’ve either come up in the top two or through the play-offs.

“Leeds have carried that mentality totally into the Premier League and what happens to Leeds then, they’ll go to Old Trafford for example and they have real disappointment - it doesn’t hurt them, it doesn’t affect them. They don’t go into the next game and think ‘well we've got to do this and we’ll play five at the back or we’ll overload these areas to stop people playing’.

“The reality for Leeds under Bielsa, they will get better and better and stronger and stronger because they’re fearless.

“It is only against a top team i.e (Manchester) United, Liverpool or Manchester City where the colours will really get lowered because they’re coming up against people who can handle the athleticism and also they can hurt them heavily on the counter-attack i.e with Rashford and Martial, Salah and Mane - those type of players.

“The whole squad, when he (Bielsa) came in, I think it was reported how hard he used to work them.

“There was a little bit of disappointment in the first year, people said they ran out of legs and ran out of energy - they never, they just had a couple of big things go against them and that’s football.

“As the song says ‘Marching on Together’ - they really are.”
