Leeds United secured a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League at St James' Park on Tuesday evening.

Marcelo Bielsa's side secured their first points and goals of 2021 on Tyneside and piled more misery on their hosts.

Steve Bruce's outfit are now 11 games without a win in all competitions with the Magpies looking worryingly downwards towards the top flight relegation places.

Leeds, though, moved 14 points clear of the drop zone having picked up 26 points at the halfway mark of the campaign.

We asked Shields Gazette writer Miles Starforth for his thoughts on the Whites following a battling win in the North East for Bielsa's men.

"Leeds, for the first 45 minutes, were very good.

"They looked like the established Premier League team, not Newcastle United. They moved the ball quickly and purposefully, and looked like scoring every time they got in and around the home box.

"They knew the areas where Newcastle were vulnerable, and looked to exploit them. That said, Allan Saint-Maximin's second-half introduction changed things.

"Leeds lost control of the ball. They were put on the back foot, and had to show a different side to their game. They were resilient enough to see the game out and take all three points.

"Leeds look destined for a very comfortable mid-table finish, which would be an impressive achievement in their first season back in the Premier League."
