Steve Bruce's Magpies provide United's next opponents on Tuesday evening at St James' Park and Newcastle have now gone nine games without a victory.

Seven of those fixtures have come in the Premier League with five ending in defeat, including Monday's 3-0 reverse at Arsenal which left the Magpies 15th and just seven points above the dropzone.

Arsenal, though, had previously gone seven league games without a win, losing five - yet now the Gunners have taken 13 points from a last possible 15.

Lascelles admits Newcastle's second-half display at The Emirates was "terrible" but the skipper is confident that his team have the talent to turn matters around and is taking inspiration from the Gunners.

The Magpies are back in action on Saturday night at Aston Villa, three days before they take on Leeds.

"Of course it is tough," Lascelles told NUFCTV.

"We are just annoyed at ourselves and obviously disappointed with the situation we are in.

"We honestly thought we would come here and put up a better performance than that.

"The first half was all right, the second half was terrible so we need to really look at ourselves.

"I have been in a lot of tough situations over the years and it's just about how you deal with them.

"Every club goes through a spell, these (Arsenal) went nearly ten games without a win and turned it around and we do have the players to do that.

"I think it's just important that we stick together, the manager and the staff and the players and just keep trying to do the right things.

"Hopefully it starts to get better."
