Marcelo Bielsa will remain anxious until Leeds United 'get what they're looking for'

Leeds United cannot predict how many of their nine remaining games they will need to win to secure promotion, so Marcelo Bielsa cannot relax until he and the Whites have achieved their goal.

Five straight wins have put United top of the Championship by a point and seven clear of the play-off places, putting a mid-season rash of poor results firmly behind them.

According to Bielsa, nothing has changed in the way Leeds are playing, between the run of four defeats in five games in January and February, and the current winning streak, other than the fact that chances are going in at one end and not the other.

“I don’t recognise difference in performances,” he said.

“I can see a difference in efficiency but I think that in both periods the team attacked well and have defended well as well. There are moments where you defend well but you concede goals, there are moments when you attack well and you don’t score.

“I think the team in defence and attack had a similar average in both periods, but now we score easier and we avoid that the opponents score.

“But the performance and the style is similar. What happens in both boxes is different.”

Having got themselves back into a commanding position, partly-restoring what was once an 11-point cushion between themselves and third-placed Fulham, Leeds need to keep in mind the fact that they have already let slip such a position this season.

“The most important thing is what is going to happen when the competition finishes,” said Bielsa.

“A few months ago we had 11 points difference and we lost this difference. What we have to do is wait until the end to see what happens.

“But, of course, we value this reality [being top].”

And until such a time as promotion is achieved, Bielsa will continue to remain anxious.

“Maybe the competition finishes in the last match or maybe before,” he said.

“We have 27 points left, we don’t know how many points we are going to need. But we have nine matches to get the points we need.

“Of course there is an anxiety until we get what we are looking for. But this is for every team.”
