Marcelo Bielsa says Ian Poveda has adapted well to life at Leeds United but admits his senior performances will be where he is judged.

The 19-year-old winger made the switch to Elland Road from Manchester City last week penning a four-and-a-half-year contract in West Yorkshire.

Poveda came through the ranks under Pep Guardiola’s watchful eye at the Etihad following spells in Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Brentford’s academy ranks.

The highly-rated winger, though, was allowed to link up with the Whites having seen his chances limited under the Spaniard with his contract due to expire in the summer.

United utility man Stuart Dallas praised how quickly the England Under-20 international had settled in at Thorp Arch on Monday before he was named on the bench for the dramatic midweek victory over Millwall in LS11.

Poveda could make his debut this weekend having been an unused substitute against the Lions, and his on-pitch time is where Bielsa believes the results of his hard work on the training ground in the coming months will be seen.

“You have social adaptations but after you have adaptations according to the method of working,” Bielsa said.

“In this sense, living with him is very nice and also his way to face the day-to-day is very good.

“But the evaluation we have to do which is most important is how he’s going to play and the way he’s going to play.

“So for him to succeed, it’s very good his adaptation with his team-mates and the training is not difficult for him. Training is useful for him.

“But this is private for us. It’s inside doors. What we have to comment on is how he is going to play.”

Asked about how happy he was with his squad following the capture of Poveda and striker Jean-Kevin Augustin, Bielsa added: “We always work with around 18 players.

“Two players left the club. We have to say that Poveda and Augustin are players that improve the group.

“We don’t know how their adaptation process will be. Those processes always have been long because our play requires co-ordination in the collective way that is very important for us.”
