Phillips had to be substituted after suffering a knock to his calf during Saturday's 1-0 win at home to Reading in which Whites 'keeper Casilla also injured his hand.

Casilla still completed the full match but both players will now be assessed in the run-up to Wednesday evening's clash at the Riverside.

Asked firstly about Casilla at Tuesday morning's pre-Middlesbrough press conference, Bielsa said: "He has a problem but maybe he plays.

"That depends on how the pain develops but if he can support the pain he will play."

Bielsa added that the Spaniard's fingers were not broken but inflamed but United's head coach said he could not be sure how the injury occurred.

"In this situation I don't have the answer for this," said Bielsa.

"I didn't ask for this and didn't think to ask this."

Turning attentions to Phillips, Bielsa reasoned: "It's a kick. It depends on if the pain disappears as well, the same situation with Kiko.

"But with both players I am optimistic."

Casilla maintained his place in the Whites net against the Royals with United still awaiting the FA's verdict into his hearing over alleged racism.

The 'keeper's hearing into an alleged remark of a racist nature towards striker Jonathan Leko in the 1-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic at the end of September took place in London last week.

The Leeds No 1 denies the allegations strongly but the Spaniard would be looking at a ban of several games if found guilty.

On the injury front, midfielder Adam Forshaw is United's only first-team absentee with Forshaw out for the season following hip surgery.
