Leeds United are attempting to tie up the signing of winger Alex Mendy after his recent trial at Elland Road.

Mendy has returned home to France following a fortnight-long stay with Leeds but the club remain interested in adding him to their senior squad on a permanent basis.

The 27-year-old figured repeatedly in United’s pre-season programme and made his last appearance as a substitute against Newcastle United but he called a halt to his trial before a planned outing in Tuesday’s behind-closed-doors friendly between Leeds and Leicester City.

Mendy is a free agent after four seasons with Czech club Mlada Boleslav, and his short time with Leeds has tempted manager Simon Grayson to consider handing him a full-tome contract.

Grayson, however, described Mendy’s situation as “complicated” and said a deal with the Frenchman could be followed by a period on loan at another club.

Grayson said: “We’re looking to see if there’s something we can do with him because we feel he’s got potential.

“There’s a few complications but he’s impressed us. There’s an option if we can get him that we might send him out on loan to learn the English game but he’s done himself no harm.”

Leeds were planning to field Ibrahim Maaroufi - a former Inter Milan player - and two German trialists in Saturday’s reserve fixture against Farsley Celtic.

Striker Felix Luz and midfielder Dennis Grote have followed Maaroufi in linking up with United’s squad.
