Sunderland are eyeing up a last-minute deal for Lonergan and would match his current contract with an 18-month deal at the Stadium of Light but the 34-year-old travelled to Hull with United’s squad yesterday and Leeds remain reluctant to lose him in the last 24 hours of the window.

Lonergan, who joined United on a two-year deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August, has been second-choice at Elland Road behind Felix Wiedwald for most of this season but is the only experienced cover for Wiedwald.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell, 21, made his debut for Leeds in 2016 but has not made a Football League appearance since. Former Feyenoord keeper Kamil Miazek, meanwhile, joined Leeds’ Under-23 side earlier this month and trained with the first team at a warm-weather camp in Spain last week but the 21-year-old is also lacking in senior game-time.

Lonergan worked under Sunderland assistant Kit Symons at Fulham but the cash-strapped Wearside club are also interested in Middlesbrough’s Dimitrios Konstantopoulos. Leeds would demand a fee for Lonergan but Boro are understood to be willing to allow Dimi to leave on a free transfer with his contract due to expire at the end of this season.

United head coach Christiansen said: “He will travel with the team and he will be in the squad (against Hull).”

Asked if Lonergan would remain with Leeds beyond the end of the window, the Leeds boss said: “We will see.”

Lonergan is in his second spell at Elland Road having played 38 times for the club during the 2011-12 campaign.

United turned to him again after allowing Rob Green to depart for Huddersfield Town in the last few days of the recent summer transfer window but he was behind Wiedwald at the outset and despite Christiansen dropping the German in October, Lonergan lost his place after seven league games.

He was used in this month’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Newport County.

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman is prioritising the signing of a striker before the January window closes at 11pm tomorrow but he admitted a new keeper was also on the agenda, saying: “We’ll try to add in these last days. I would say definitely one and hopefully two.”
