England Under-21 goalkeeper Alex McCarthy did Leeds United a good turn before Christmas, and Ipswich look set to rely on him for the rest of the season after signing the goalkeeper on loan from Reading last week.

McCarthy is highly-valued by his parent club – so much so that he signed a new deal until 2016 before leaving for Portman Road – and Leeds were deeply impressed by his six displays in November and December.

The 22-year-old proved a commanding presence and an excellent shot-stopper. Kicking was his only discernible weakness.
