Check out our at a glance guide to Leeds United’s EFL Cup third round clash with Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road.
Key Battle - Liam Bridcutt v Hope Akpan
If Bridcutt makes it - and if Monk chooses to start him - then this contest will be a important as it was seven days ago. Bridcutt got the better of Akpan in the centre of midfield and Blackburn weren’t able to get their performance together until the opening goal forced them to take some risks. Dominate the centre of the pitch and Rovers will be there for the taking again.
Key Man - Marvin Emnes
Emnes rejuvenated Blackburn after coming off the bench at Elland Road last week and it was no surprise to see him start in Saturday’s win over Rotherham. He scored in that game too and the one thing Emnes has, aside from a good finish on him, is pace to burn. Luke Ayling found that a problem first time round and Leeds need to find a way to deal with him tonight.
Last time at Elland Road:
Tuesday, September 13, 2016
Leeds United 2 Blackburn Rovers 1
Goals: Leeds - Wood 66, Bartley 87. Blackburn - Emnes 77.
Phil Hay’s view: “Both of these teams have a victory behind them - two back-to-back in United’s case - so this should be a different game to the tense, scrappy affair we saw in Leeds last Tuesday. In many ways the pressure is off and while both clubs will want to progress to round four, they won’t lose much sleep over the result either. Expect another close scoreline and expect goals. Blackburn scored four on Saturday.”
