Leeds United's Under-23s were held to a 1-1 draw at Barnsley in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon.

Carlos Corberan opted for a strong line-up as Ian Poveda, Tyler Roberts, Barry Douglas, Gjanni Alioski and Jamie Shackleton all started the Yorkshire derby.

Defender Leif Davis also returned to action following a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The first half passed without incident as both sides struggled to adjust to the surface at Oakwell training complex.

Leeds were restricted by the pitch as they attempted to implement their usual flowing style of play with misplaced passes and heavy touches a constant feature.

There was one chance of note in the opening half as Reds defender Mads Andersen leapt highest at a free-kick but he could only power his header over the bar.

The Whites, though, were better after the interval and opened the scoring just past the hour mark through substitute Bobby Kamwa.

Poveda was the star as he turned on halfway to set the visitors free down the right as he made a lung-busting run forward off the ball.

Mateusz Bogusz found the winger in stride inside the area before he played a low ball into Kamwa's feet who made no mistake with his first touch having replaced Roberts just seconds earlier.

United allowed the hosts back into the game almost instantly with a rare mistake at the back as Elia Caprile was caught short.

The goalkeeper lunged in with the Reds closing in leaving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

Aiden Marsh stepped up and sent the stopper the wrong way with an emphatic finish into the top corner.

The strike was the last meaningful action of the afternoon as the two sides couldn't be separated with the spoils shared.

Leeds United 23s: Caprile, Hosannah, Davis, Struijk, Douglas, Casey (McCalmont 55), Shackleton, Alioski, Poveda (Gotts 71), Bogusz, Roberts (Kamwa 61). Subs not used: Male, Cresswell.
