Leeds United transfer news: Liverpool prospect moves to Elland Road, Whites tipped to sell Marcelo Bielsa signing

The summer transfer window provided further evidence of just how much Leeds United value their academy.

Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival in 2018 has sparked a number of first-team opportunities for players inside the academy ranks at Thorp Arch, the most recent being Niall Huggins at Arsenal on Sunday.

There has been significant investment too, with Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Cody Drameh and Crysencio Summerville among the youngsters to join last summer.

The academy, as it has for a while now, continues to be a real asset and a key fundamental for the football club.

And it appears 16-year-old Cuba Cline from Liverpool has become the latest prospect to join the Elland Road club.

The defender has been capped by England at under-15s level, and it is believed he has signed a two-year-old scholarship. The exact details of what squad he will link up with are currently unknown.

In an Instagram post, Cline said: “It’s been a class 6 years @liverpoolfc.

"Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way, but it’s time for me to face my new challenge @leedsunited.

"The hard work continues...”

Meanwhile, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan believes Helder Costa could be sold when the transfer window re-opens.

The winger, who joined permanently last year for around £16million from Wolves, has not started a league game since November, though scored from off the bench during the 4-2 defeat at the Emirates.

Whelan, delivering his views to Football Insider, believes Leeds paid too much for the 27-year-old.

He said: “On one hand I say no, on the other hand, I look at Costa and see nothing coming from him so on that front, yeah, because I’m not sure you know how useful Costa is going to be.

“It seems like a bit of a waste of money right now from what we put into him and what we’re getting out of him. I don’t think anyone’s really trusting him, even for the short amount of time he comes on the field, he’s not shown enough and could be sold, in my opinion.

“I always worry why Premier League outfits let go of players because they can’t cut it in the Premier League. So, again, it’s down to players, it’s down to them to produce.

“You can only make whatever you’ve got at your disposal work and it’s down to attitude and it’s about quality. Right now, £16million pounds is about £10million too much. We overpaid for him.”
