Liam Cooper looks ahead to Scotland Euros bow

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has enjoyed a memorable 12 months, winning promotion to the Premier League with his boyhood club last summer before heading to the Euros with Scotland.

“It’s lovely to be here,” said the Whites captain ahead of this afternoon’s game against the Czech Republic.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Not so much nerves, but I’m sure they will come when we realise what we’re about to go and do.

“We can go make history – we look forward to that and the fact we can go and make a nation proud.

“I have to pinch myself at times. What a group of lads we’ve got, living all these moments together. We’ve got plenty more to come. We’re looking forward to getting going.”

Gareth Southgate hails Kalvin Phillips

England boss Gareth Southgate served up enormous praise for Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips after the Whites midfielder excelled on his major international tournament debut.

“I think Kalvin is a player who is so understated and has had a fantastic start to his international career,” said Southgate, speaking to BBC Sport.

“I thought he was immense throughout the game, as they all were and I am so pleased for Raheem.

“He has had this hex if you like in tournaments, not being able to get the goal but I thought he was dangerous all day, right form the start.

“I am really pleased for all of them.”
