Leeds United sunk by Cardiff City's Whites-specific game-plan says Bluebirds man of the match

MAN OF THE MATCH Junior Hoilett said Cardiff City always planned to hit Leeds United on the counter upon Sunday's Championship restart in South Wales.

Marcelo Bielsa's Whites had 69 per cent of possession and 17 attempts at goal compared to Cardiff's seven but only three Whites shots were on target and crucially both of City's only two shots on target hit the back of the net.

Hoilett hit the first of them after picking up on a loose pass by Kalvin Phillips in the 35th minute and substitute Robert Glatzel then netted the second 19 minutes from time, again after Leeds lost possession following Liam Cooper's pass out from the centre of defence.

The victory took the Bluebirds seventh - only outside of the play-offs on goal difference - and Hoilett said the whole manner of victory was very much by design and a case of job done.

"We knew they we would have the majority of the possession so we stayed compact and made it hard to play through us and hit them on the counter," Canadian international Hoilett told Sky.

"We set up well. We wanted to get a performance in and we worked hard from front to back and the subs came on and made a major difference as well.

"We have a great belief in the squad.

"Before the break we had a momentum as well and we just have to carry it on.

"We have got a few important injuries that have come back fit and came off the bench and helped us."
