Leeds United striker Chris Wood will return to action for New Zealand this evening in a game which could make or break his side's stay in the Confederations Cup in Russia.

The All Whites will take on Mexico for a 7pm kick-off and their second fixture in Group A of which New Zealand sit bottom after their opening 2-0 loss against hosts Russia.

Wood played 90 minutes of that encounter but his side's days in the competition will be numbered without the right results on Wednesday evening and afternoon.

Group rivals Russia first take on Portugal (4pm) with Portugal also seeking their first victory following their opening day 2-2 draw with Mexico.

Defeat to Mexico and even a draw for Russia would spell the end for New Zealand's journey in the competition, even with one group game still to play.

The All Whites are set to finish their Group A fixtures against Portugal on Saturday evening (6pm).

The top two from Group A and Group B advance to the semi-finals.
