Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips named in Gareth Southgate's final England squad for Euro 2020 tournament

A shoulder injury, sustained in almost the very last action of the 2020/21 season, initially cast doubt on the 25-year-old's involvement but Leeds were always confident their man would be ready in time for the tournament, if selected. He was able to train with the squad yesterday and has appeared in footage broadcast by England moving freely and sprinting.

Southgate's squad was confirmed at 5pm and Phillips joins West Ham United's Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson of Liverpool in the defensive midfield options.

Phillips has won seven caps for his country since his England debut back in August, before he had ever kicked a ball in the Premier League. He played all but 19 minutes of the trio of World Cup Qualifying games back in March.

The Three Lions take on Austria tomorrow night at the Riverside Stadium, before their final pre-tournament warm-up against Romania on Saturday.

When the action finally kicks off for Phillips and his fellow England players on June 13 Croatia provide the first opposition. A clash with the old enemy and a potential Leeds United Euros reunion between Phillips and club captain Liam Cooper follows on June 18 and the final group game pits England against Czech Republic on June 22.

The last time Leeds had English representation at a major tournament came 19 years ago, when Danny Mills, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Fowler and Nigel Martyn went to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
