Red Star Belgrade are poised to challenge Leeds United for Kyle Lafferty’s signature in the January transfer window.
Leeds failed to sign Lafferty prior to the closing of the emergency loan window, although the YEP understands that the Whites retain an interest in bringing the Northern Ireland international to Elland Road when the winter window opens.
The Serbian giants have reportedly identified Lafferty as a potential difference maker as they look to qualify for the Champions League group stages next season.
Red Star are in millions of pounds of debt and require a place in Europe’s elite club competition to get the club back on a stable financial footing.
Leeds were already hit with the news that Lafferty’s former club Palermo are interested in bringing the Northern Ireland international back to Italy when the winter window opens.

However, there are suggestions that the 28-year-old would be keen on a switch to Elland Road.
Part of the appeal of moving to Leeds would be working with international colleague Stuart Dallas. Dallas has played a key creative role for the Michael O’Neill’s side, aiding Lafferty’s total of seven goals in European Championship qualification.
Lafferty is thought to favour a loan move in January. With a chance to shine at next summer’s Euro finals, the Norwich City striker knows that he could put himself in a strong position should he move on loan and then take advantage of the fact he will be a free agent in the summer.
