United's £7million summer signing made his first competitive start for the club since he was ruled out for four months in early September with knee ligament damage.

The 25-year-old made an early return to action against Newcastle United in the Premier League Cup two weeks ago completing 45 minutes from the bench and was named in Carlos Corberan's starting line-up for the trip to Lancashire.

Bamford notched a hat-trick on his return in a thrilling 6-3 victory over Burnley at the Barnfield Training Complex with Jack Clarke, Izzy Brown and Lewis Baker also finding the back of the net.

"I probably could've had four, maybe five. Whenever it's a chance I want and expect to score. I should've scored at least four but I'm happy to get three and it was important in the end because it helped the team win."

Bamford came through 90 minutes unscathed against the Clarets for the first time since picking up his injury and admitted it felt good to be back in action.

"That was the main thing," he said of completing the fixture.

Patrick Bamford scores hat-trick during first competitive Leeds United start since September"On the second goal I jarred my knee a little bit but it's these games and things like that that are needed to test it. That was important and I managed to carry on and then it's just getting through the 90 minutes and getting those minutes in my legs which are knackered now.

"As a striker it's important to score it doesn't matter what level it's at. It's just getting confidence and match sharpness back to take into the first team action."
