Jackson, a former Whites player, has managed the Under 18s for four years and will now lead the 23s into their first Premier League 2 season.

The Whites will take their place in Division Two of the Premier League 2 system, having earned Category One academy status earlier this summer.

Their first fixture is tonight at Stoke City but Jackson will simply be observing, as members of Marcelo Bielsa's staff take charge of the fixture before he begins his role in earnest tomorrow.

"I’m delighted to be thought of for the role and it is a very privileged position to be in at this football club," said Jackson.

“It is a chance for me to step up, it is a great opportunity and one I am looking forward to with excitement.”

Jackson came through Leeds United's academy himself as a young player and made his Premier League debut against Middlesbrough in 1996 as an 80th minute replacement for John Pemberton.

He went on to make 11 starts and seven further substitute appearances in his Whites career, before a 2000 move to Scunthorpe, a club with whom he spent five years.

After a 20-year playing career the defender returned to Thorp Arch as a coach in 2015 and a year later took over the Under 18s alongside fellow former Leeds player Andy Gray. When Gray departed Jackson remained, in sole charge.

His 18s won the Professional Development League North title in 2017/18 and a number of his youngsters have gone on to first team involvement, including Robbie Gotts and Jamie Shackleton.

Leeds have moved to strengthen the Under 23s squad this summer with the additions of Joe Gelhardt from Wigan Athletic and Arsenal's Sam Greenwood.

They are expected to complete the signing of Feyenoord winger Crysencio Summerville this week.
