Marcelo Bielsa's Whites had 62 per cent of possession which with any side can often mean nothing yet Leeds also mustered 16 shots on goal compared to Everton's ten.

Seven of United's attempts were on target and two hit the woodwork with three more blocked.

Everton managed six on target but crucially two of them found the back of the net and Dominic Calvert-Lewin fired in five attempts at goal.

Patrick Bamford was next best in that department with four, one ahead of Raphinha with three.

Leeds also boasted the better passing success rate of 82 per cent compared to Everton's 76 and of the players who started Pascal Struijk topped the charts at 94 per cent, four per cent better than next best Liam Cooper.

Struijk also proved United's best player aerially in winning four aerial battles, one more than Cooper.

Struijk was also second in terms of number of passes attempted with 66, 12 behind Luke Ayling who had easily the most touches of the ball with 116.

Raphinha was next with 85 followed by Cooper (79), Struijk (78) and Stuart Dallas (69).

Yet it was the positioning of the Whites defence that led to Everton's opener as Gylfi Sigurdsson reacted quickest to Lucas Digne's cross and defending set pieces again let Leeds down for Everton's second goal.

Raphinha bagged United's sole strike and Bamford provided the assist as part of three key passes, the game's best.

Yet despite their impressive figures. Leeds ultimately came away with nothing and Everton keeper Robin Olsen proved a huge factor in making six saves, three of which were collected with the other three parried.

A message from the Editor:
