Leeds United outcast Conor Shaughnessy makes move to Rochdale following Elland Road release

Leeds United have confirmed the release of defender Conor Shaughnessy - who has immediately joined League One outfit Rochdale.

The 24-year-old has brought a five-year association with the Elland Road club to a close, having failed to make a first team appearance for the Whites in over two-and-a-half-years.

Shaughnessy initially joined the Leeds ranks in 2016 on a trial basis from Reading before penning a contract with the development squad at Thorp Arch.

After breaking into the first team under former head coach Thomas Christiansen he made 15 appearances in all competitions and was handed an improved four-year deal.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international fell down the pecking order after Marcelo Bielsa's arrival at the club, making just one appearance under the Argentine.

He spent time on loan at Scottish side Hearts before short stints with Mansfield Town and Burton Albion in the Football League in recent seasons.

Shaughnessy was expected to depart LS11 last summer but a move never materialised and he has been training away from the club after being deemed surplus to requirements.

The centre-back - who can also play as a defensive midfielder - has agreed to terminated his contract by mutual consent with his deal due to expire in the summer.

He has immediately put pen to paper with Rochdale.

“There were a few clubs interested, but I had a really good conversation with the manager here about the way he plays,” Shaughnessy said over his move to Rochdale.

“I’ve watched a few games, seen the style of play, and it’s really attractive football to me. It suits me as a player and how I like to play, so it was quite an easy decision.

“I had the meeting with Brian which went really well. I met the staff, had a good chat, and since then it’s been getting things sorted with Leeds.

“I’m so excited to get started now. I can’t wait to get on the pitch, play regular football, meet the lads and get right into it.”
