Luke Murphy made a 60-minute comeback as Leeds United’s development squad began their league campaign with 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.

The midfielder came through an hour at Elland Road last night, putting himself in contention for a first-team return later this week.

Murphy underwent knee surgery a month ago but a swift recovery allowed him to resume full training ahead of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

He was one of a number of first-team players fielded yesterday as United’s Under-21s suffered a late loss in a game marred by a serious injury to Ipswich’s Monty Patterson.

Leeds opened the scoring after just two minutes through Frank Mulhern but Shane McLaughlin equalised on the half-hour mark and Ipswich went on to snatch a late victory when James Alabi slotted home a calm finish.

Patterson suffered a suspected broken leg midway through the second half.

United: Grimes, Coyle, Vann, Skelton, Denton, Phillips (Dawson 72), Murphy (Purver 60), Sloth, Walters, Erwin (Parkin 78), Mulhern. Subs. Peacock-Farrell, M Taylor.
