Leeds United are working to finalise a loan deal for Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman as top target Angus Gunn prepares for a £10m move to Southampton.

Gunn’s pending switch from Manchester City to St Mary’s has ended United’s interest in him and opened the door for Blackman to join on a season-long loan.

Leeds identified Gunn - the 22-year-old who played in the Championship on loan at Norwich City last season - as the prime candidate to fill the goalkeeping vacancy at Elland Road but Manchester City chose to listen to permanent offers for him and accepted a bid rising to around £13m from Southampton yesterday.

United were also thwarted in their attempts to land the experienced David Stockdale from Birmingham City after Birmingham rejected an offer to take the 32-year-old on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.

The Elland Road club subsequently switched their attention to Blackman and are now trying to formally agree a loan which will bring Blackman north from Chelsea for the whole of the 2018-19 campaign.

Blackman has attracted interest from abroad but is understood to be keen on taking up another opportunity in the Championship. He was pictured at Thorp Arch almost two weeks ago having come onto United’s radar amid the impasse over Stockdale’s future.

The move would be Blackman’s second spell in the league after his stay at Sheffield United last season. The 24-year-old made 31 league appearances and featured in both of the Blades’ wins over Leeds as Chris Wilder’s side finished 10th a year after winning the League One title.

Leeds and head coach Marcelo Bielsa are now ready to install Blackman as first choice ahead of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who finished last term as number one.
