Liverpool have been installed as 7/2 favourites to sign Leeds United youngster Sam Byram next month – but the bookmakers expect him will stay at Elland Road beyond the end of the January transfer window.
Bookies Sky Bet are offering odds of 1/3 that Byram sees out the remainder of his contract with Leeds, despite head coach Steve Evans claiming that bids for the 22-year-old were highly likely in January.
Byram’s deal expires at the end of this season and he turned down the offer of an extension earlier this month.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were strongly linked with him over the weekend and Byram kept his name in lights with a classy equaliser in Leeds’ 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest yesterday.
The Anfield club are priced at 7/2 to strike a deal for Byram before the transfer window closes, with Norwich City at 6/1, West Ham United at 10/1 and Tottenham Hotspur at 12/1.
Aston Villa, who are understood to have scouted Byram during United’s recent win at Wolves, are seen as 16/1 outsiders for his signature.
Speaking after yesterday’s draw at Forest, Evans said: “The fans might not know this but if Sam doesn’t sign a contract then someone in the summer still has to pay about £2m for him. It’s based on earnings over the last four years and Sam has earned a lot of money in that time. It is also based on appearances and potential.
“If you’re in the Premier League and thinking he’s going to cost £5m to £7m in January, do you wait until the summer when there’ll be an auction of three or four clubs looking to get him under the compensation scheme? You would go get him now, wouldn’t you?”
Where will Sam Byram be playing when the January transfer window closes?
Leeds United - 1/3
Liverpool - 7/2
Norwich - 6/1
West Ham - 10/1
Tottenham - 12/1
Aston Villa - 16/1
