LEEDS United fans can take a trip down memory lane thanks to a new book looking at the biggest and best stars from the club’s proud history.

All White is an affectionately-written and lavishly-illustrated guide to the 100 greatest players that have appeared for the Elland Road side.

And, appropriately enough, the job of selecting who should figure in that top 100 was left to the people who really matter at United – the supporters.

They cast more than 6,000 votes for a total of 206 different players in an online poll that was conducted over the summer.

The full list of 100 names as well as the all-important matter of who finished where are being kept under wraps ahead of the 224-page book’s launch this Friday.

But the man behind the project, lifelong Leeds fan and author Jon Howe, is keen to point out that any complaints about the roll of honour shouldn’t be directed at him.

Jon, from Wortley, said: “I’ve written an introduction in which I basically try to absolve myself from any responsibility for the list!

“I’m sure there will be plenty of debate and maybe a few arguments about who’s in and who’s out. The good thing is, though, that the final choice was down to the fan. I’m hoping they’ll feel a real sense of ownership with the book.”

Many of the names that have made the list will come as little surprise, with 1950s legend John Charles, Revie era stars such as Billy Bremner and Norman Hunter and 1991-92 title winners including Gordon Strachan and David Batty all featuring. But room has also been found for pre-war players such as Ernie Hart plus a number of relatively unsung heroes from United’s Second Division struggles in the 1980s.

One of those 1980s favourites, Bobby Davison, will be present at the book’s launch this Friday evening at Billy’s Bar at Elland Road, along with latter-day Leeds skipper Dominic Matteo.

The book will then be exclusively available from United for a two-week period before going on general sale. Pre-orders can be lodged online with Amazon and Waterstones.

Jon was assisted on the book by United statistics expert Andrew Dalton while Leeds great Eddie Gray has written the foreword.

Celebrity fans including Ardal O’Hanlon and Ralph Ineson have also contributed material.

l All White is published by Pitch Publishing, priced £24.99 hardback.
