Vurnon Anita is expected to be passed fit for Saturday’s game at Nottingham Forest after limping out of Leeds United’s League Cup win over Newport County.

The former Newcastle United player was hurt during the second half of yesterday’s second round at Elland Road, leaving the field an hour into the game, but head coach Thomas Christiansen is hopeful that the full-back will travel to Nottingham with the rest of his squad on Friday afternoon.

The Leeds boss has dealt with a string of absentees since the start of the season and Leeds are still assessing the fitness of Caleb Ekuban and Pablo Hernandez, both of whom were injured in last weekend’s 2-0 win at Sunderland.

Anita, who started at left-back at the Stadium of Light, walked straight down the tunnel for treatment after being replaced by Liam Cooper during United’s win over Newport.

But asked if he expected to have him available at Forest, Christiansen said: “If he’s needed, yes. He’s okay.”

United remain without defenders Gaetano Berardi and Matthew Pennington, both of whom have been in the treatment room since the opening game of the season with shoulder and ankle problems respectively.

And Leeds are yet to disclose the severity of the damage suffered by Ekuban at Sunderland.

The striker injured a foot bone in the second half and was on crutches as he arrived at Elland Road to watch yesterday’s 5-1 win over Newport.

Hernandez, meanwhile, was involved in a collision with Eunan O’Kane and also missed the Newport clash.

Christiansen said Leeds were still to decide if Hernandez would be fit enough to feature at Forest.

“With Pablo we need to have confirmation,” he said.

The season’s first international break follows Leeds’ game in Nottingham and the club are hopeful that both Pennington and Berardi will return to contention next month.
