Pontus Jansson will undergo a scan today with Leeds United hoping to see the defender passed fit for next week’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Bristol City.

Jansson arrived back in England from Sweden yesterday after pulling out of international duty with an injury sustained in Leeds’ 4-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

The centre-back, who was hurt in a tackle on West Brom winger Harvey Barnes, saw out the second half at the Hawthorns on Saturday after receiving treatment on the pitch and travelled to Sweden over the weekend with the aim of featuring in games against Turkey and Russia.

He was due to join up with Sweden’s squad in Stockholm on Monday but was sent back to Leeds for full assessments on a problem which has made him an early doubt for United’s game against Bristol City a week on Saturday.

The severity of his injury should be confirmed when Jansson sees a specialist later today.

Bielsa has no experienced defenders available to replace him with Luke Ayling out until January with a knee ligament injury and Gaetano Berardi unlikely to return from a torn hamstring until February.

Academy player Leif Davis was named among Bielsa’s substitutes at The Hawthorns and the 18-year-old would have been in line for a debut had Jansson been unable to see out the match.

Conor Shaughnessy – the Irish youngster who featured in the centre of defence last season – is a player who Bielsa planned to rely on in the event of multiple injuries but Shaughnessy has been absent twice himself this term and made his latest comeback with Leeds’ Under-23s against Crewe Alexandra last week.
