Leeds United: Disappointing to see Austin go but we need his replacement in now - Gray

LEEDS UNITED announced their released list this week and Rodolph Austin is the main name on it.

I am sure he will get a club at the top end of the Championship – maybe even a side who can get into the play-offs.

But as we said last week, the important thing that the supporters think should be resolved is the future of the head coach and what is happening to Neil Redfearn.

The thing about it is that has got to be sorted out pretty quickly because we have got to recruit new players as we have lost a couple of players such as Rodolph and Aidy White who would have been around the first team next season.

Rodolph had a big part to play last season.

You have to replace these players, especially Rodolph, who was a regular as well and a fantastic player for the Championship. I think he did well and will fit into most sides in the division and be a decent player.

In terms of being surprised at his exit, nothing really surprises you in football anymore.

We just need the relationship sorting out between Massimo and Neil to see the direction of the way the club is going, so we can sit down and get players in and start looking at next season.

Neil himself will want to know what is happening and if he is the man who is going to coach. It is better for all parties if he knows now as it seems pretty quiet on that front.

The sooner it is done, the better both for Neil and the club.

Obviously, Adam Pearson has come in as the new executive director and he is someone who has previously worked at Leeds and knows the club and hopefully him and Massimo can work things out for the good of the club and move it forward.

Adam has good knowledge of how to run a football club and will be Massimo’s right-hand man.

They need to sort things out for the club and see which way things are going to go.

It won’t be easy getting the players in because the quality ones want to be going to a side who are going for promotion.

Massimo has spoken about getting an English head of recruitment and I think that would make sense.

We need someone who knows the game in this country and can look at what we need. I think Massimo brought the Italians in last summer with Nicola Salerno and having looked at the Championship for the past year, he will now realise that the Championship is not an easy league to get out of.

He will be looking to this country to try and find the right players. But you have got to get those players signed pretty quickly. I don’t think you can wait until the season has started until you get those right calibre of players in. If we do that, we will find ourselves playing catch-up again, which we don’t want.

Obviously, Lewis Cook has signed a new contract and that’s good news.

But in terms of the new contract, it does not mean that much materially, but just safeguards the club with Lewis being such a talented young player.

Going back to the players who have been freed, Aidy White is leaving the club and he has had terrible luck with injuries and struggled to get fully fit.

He has also been shuffled around the field a bit, playing different positions and that has not suited him.

For me, Aidy is a left-back, even though he has played left-wing, left midfield and more forward as well as left-back.

He has got to settle down somewhere and make the left-back position his own.

But like with Rudy, Aidy for me is another one who will find a club, no problem at all.

Aidy is still young and just needs a run without getting injured and then he can play regularly and people can see the best of him again.

The one thing you have to remember with Aidy is that at one time, he was the golden boy before Sam Byram came into the side.

But in terms of all the players who are leaving the football club, you wish them well.

I watched the Champions League semi-finals this week and I think everyone was expecting a Barcelona versus Real Madrid final.

But Juventus got through and Italian teams are always difficult to beat and Juve will be planning now in terms of how to cope with Barca’s front three.

It will be an intriguing final and a classic Spain versus Italy confrontation.
