The game at Elland Road with Newcastle United produced a thrilling encounter as new loan signing Lamine Sakho made his debut for the club having joined from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

Alan Shearer put the visitors ahead from the spot after 20 minutes before Whites striker Mark Viduka struck just four minutes later to level up proceedings.

Sakho was causing the Magpies all sorts of bother on the left and it was a nod down from the new man which left Viduka a chance to strike..

The winger was producing lots of trickery - and would go on to earn the man of the match award - but it took Leeds until just before the hour mark to turn their dominance into the lead as Alan Smith scored.

Newcastle, though, left with a point as Shearer bagged just two minutes from time to earn his side a draw.

It was a bright start to the campaign for United after their struggles the season before but the campaign would ultimately end in relegation the following summer at Bolton.
