After a 0-0 draw with Uruguay in their opening Group 1 match of the 1966 World Cup, England took on Mexico needing a win.

Leeds United's Jack Charlton featured for the Three Lions in the heart of defence at Wembley as the hosts secured a vital 2-0 victory.

Goals from Bobby - Jack's brother - and Roger Hunt were enough to see England earn the spoils in the capital.

Sir Alf Ramsey's men went on to topple France in the final group outing to secure passage into the knockout rounds before charging to the final with wins over Argentina and Portugal.

England lifted the trophy for the only time in the nations history with a 4-2 win over West Germany at Wembley in front of near 100,000 crowd.
