It was a battle between the First Division champions and FA Cup winners in the capital and the afternoon produced a thrilling encounter on the pitch.

United forward Eric Cantona bagged a hat-trick in an up and down clash as Whites defender Tony Dorigo also got on the scoresheet.

Ian Rush and Dean Saunders struck for Liverpool before a last minute own goal from Leeds substitute Gordon Strachan ensured a nervy finish.

Leeds, though, weren't to be denied as Howard Wilkinson's outfit began their title defence in perfect fashion in London.

!It seems he's made a piece of history," Wilkinson said post-match.

"I understand he's the first man to score three in a Charity Shield. I would say Eric is a better player now than he was six months ago.

"He's worked very hard in pre-season training and though he still finds it difficult out there at times there's no doubt he has exceptional potential.

"He's doing all he can about trying to secure a place in the team.

"If I say nasty things and suggest Eric should work harder, he doesn't like it. If I say nice things, he's fine.

"He likes to score beautiful goals, but I've told him I don't mind ugly ones, either."
