Marcelo Bielsa's men hold an eight-point advantage over third-placed Brentford entering this evening's round of fixtures while Luton continue to battle relegation.

Cooper, though, says United must not get ahead of themselves with seven games of the run-in remaining.

"My message to the lads, I know it's a cliche, but is to approach it game-by-game," he told TalkSport.

"You've got to get over it, it can get the better of you or you can go again. We're lucky we've got a great bunch of lads, a fairly young group as well who are hungry, who want to go and develop and want to go and do this.

"They make it easier for me as a captain, they're all so determined to put last year right and hopefully we can do that. We've just got to be on it for every game now and we will be.

"Over the course of a season, you go through every single emotion. That is what football does to us and that is why we all love it.

"We've put ourselves in a really good position but anything can happen, we all know the Championship, there is no given.

"We've just got to concentrate on us and the rest will take care of itself. We've got to be at it every single game and every single minute, what will be will be.

"That's the message throughout the club, that's my message to the boys as well. We can't take anything and nothing is given to you.

"We welcome Luton to Elland Road and they're fighting for their lives, as everybody is at this time of the season. We've got to be prepared for that.

"They are a strong team, they've got a new manager and they're in good form as well."

Asked whether any potential promotion would be dedicated to club legends Norman Hunter and Trever Cheery following their untimely passing in April, he said: "They were two great men, two legends of the club who are in the back of our minds.

"If we can manage to get over the line, it will definitely be for those two.

"I know those two will be watching down on us. Everybody else who’s passed as well, our condolences go to everybody."
